Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma of borderline malignancy is a rare disease, especially in male patients. Often these tumors are not incidentally found due to abdominal symptoms. We present the radiologic abdominal computed tomography scan, surgical, and pathologic images of this unique, rare condition in a male patient. Surgical treatment is recommended to establish diagnosis and treatment.
To investigate how the sodium/calcium exchanger subtype 3 (NCX3) and its reverse mode contribute to the function of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) from the rat bladder. The study used 20 female Wistar rats. We observed the expression of the NCX3 expression in the bladder using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. The NCX3 in ICCs was also confirmed by double-labeled...
To correlate the level of oxidative stress in serum and seminal fluid and the level of sperm deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) fragmentation with sperm mitochondrial respiratory efficiency.Sperm mitochondrial respiratory activity was evaluated with a polarographic assay of oxygen consumption carried out in hypotonically treated sperm cells. A possible relationship between sperm mitochondrial respiratory...
To establish cutoff points for markers of bone remodeling that allow for screening of patients at risk for serious lithogenic activity. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 182 patients (aged between 25 and 60 years) divided into 3 groups: group 1, 56 patients without lithiasis; group 2, 67 patients with light calcium lithiasis; and group 3, 59 patients with severe calcium lithiasis. The criteria...
To determine whether the presence of benign glandular tissue at the radical prostatectomy surgical margin is associated with technique (open radical prostatectomy [ORP] or robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy [RALRP]) and if benign glandular tissue increases the risk of biochemical recurrence.Surgical specimens from men with clinical T1-T2 disease who underwent radical prostatectomy...
To analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment modalities, and outcomes of adult prostate sarcoma treated at our institution. The medical records of 25 adult patients with prostate sarcoma were obtained from January 1989 to December 2009. The clinicopathologic parameters were evaluated to determine their effect on survival. The median age was 37 years (range 18-81). The median tumor size was 9.5...
To evaluate the impact of tumor histology on clinicopathologic outcomes for patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and venous tumor thrombus (VTT).We identified 807 patients with RCC and VTT who underwent nephrectomy at our institution between 1970 and 2008. All pathologic specimens were re-reviewed by a single urologic pathologist. Patients with non-clear cell RCC (non-ccRCC, n = 56) were matched...
To examine the efficacy of trospium chloride and tolterodine on the renal parenchymal inflammatory process and upper urinary dilation in rats with chronic partial upper urinary tract obstruction.A total of 32 rats were divided into 4 groups: group 1, control; group 2, obstruction; group 3, obstruction plus tolterodine; and group 4, obstruction plus trospium chloride. In all groups, except for group...
To assess functional outcomes and complications of ureteroneocystotomies (UNCs) with or without psoas hitch or Boari flap in the reconstruction and repair of the ureter. We reviewed a consecutive series of patients that underwent open ureteral reconstruction for ureteral obstruction or injury. Underlying ureteral disorder, preoperative and postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR),...
To evaluate the efficacy of Vantris in children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) after 3 years of prospective follow-up.Over the last 3 years, 109 children (72 girls and 37 boys) with a mean age of 6.2 ± 3.4 years (mean ± SD) underwent endoscopic correction of reflux using Vantris. VUR was unilateral in 53 and bilateral in 56 patients comprising 165 renal refluxing units (RRUs). Of these, primary...
To evaluate the use of a single needle driver with the V-Loc (Covidien, Dublin, Ireland) running suture and compare this with the use of 2 needle drivers with polyglactin interrupted sutures (IS) in dividing the dorsal venous complex (DVC) and forming the urethrovesical anastomosis (UVA) during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).A prospective cohort study was performed to compare V-Loc (n =...
To examine urology trainees’ views about the quality and current practices of end-of-life care and to explore strategies for improving integration and quality of care.We conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 trainees from 4 institutions in different regions of the United States. Open-ended questions allowed participants to express themselves independently, and follow-up discussions explored...
An 84-year-old woman with left flank pain presented to our institution. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography demonstrated a large spherical adrenal mass (diameter 13 cm) showing features of a benign lesion. Histologic examination revealed a giant adrenal hemangioma. Surgical resection was curative, with no recurrence at 2 years of follow-up. Surgery is usually recommended for symptomatic patients...
To assess the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of transperitoneal laparoscopic excision of primary seminal vesicle benign tumors (SVBTs) and summarize our experience with surgical techniques and follow-up outcomes of this rare condition. This study included 6 patients who underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic excision of primary SVBTs between June 2005 and April 2011. A 5-port transperitoneal approach...
To present the results of our experience with endoureterotomy as the initial management of ureterovesical junction obstruction (UVJO) with coexisting primary or secondary obstruction at the ureteropelvic junction (UPJO) level.A total of 490 children with 561 ureterorenal units were referred to our center for further management of UVJO. Of these, 47 ureterorenal units had concomitant UPJO. All patients...
